Mola’s history

In the early 1970s, Mr Meulensteen put on his baker’s cap and started out by making apple turnovers. Under the name of Mola — Latin for ‘millstone’ — these apple turnovers and other puff-pastry products were sold to the general public. By working hard, using only the best ingredients and following traditional recipes, Mr Meulensteen’s adventure became a success. It spread throughout the region and then far beyond. In the early 1970s, Mr Meulensteen put on his baker’s cap and started out by making apple turnovers. Family business development

Sons Geert and Vic also joined the company and initiated major developments. One of these was the partnership with Banketbakkerij Wouter de Graaf to promote Mola’s sales activities in the Netherlands. This collaboration meant that Mola could continue specialising in the kinds of puff-pastry products consumers wanted.

The move to new premises

In 2012, Mola moved into new, modern premises specifically designed to allow the company to respond to the wishes and requirements of the market in a flexible way. Alongside the existing production line, a new line with a larger capacity was installed. By now, a third production line is fully operational.

Now in Germany, too

In 2013, Mola crossed the border by entering into a collaboration with the German company Bakerman®. The combination of Mola’s modern production technologies with Bakerman’s knowledge of the German market resulted in an exceptionally successful partnership. Not long after this, we started accompanying our puff-pastry products with croissants and Danish pastries.

A future full of passion

Two years later, in January 2016, Vic Meulensteen decided by mutual agreement to leave the company. Although Vic is still involved behind the scenes, it’s now up to his brother Geert — along with many other fellow masters, of course — to continue Mola’s tradition of craftsmanship, quality and passion on into the future.
